The Men’s Singles Championship was originally played on a challenge basis, and is currently played every even year. The first winner was Clergé (France) in c.1740 – thought to be the first sporting world champion in history. Jacques Edmond Barre (France, 1802-73) held the title for a record 33 years from 1829 to 1862.
