The record for the most fuel-efficient vehicle is 0.01614 litres of petrol for 100 km (14,573 mpg) and was achieved by Duke Electric Vehicles (USA) at Galot Motorsports in Benson, North Carolina, USA, on 21 July 2018.

Duke Electric Vehicles, a student team from Duke University, originally built their vehicle, named Maxwell, for the Shell Eco Marathon.
While the title is defined using petrol, the record attempt vehicle used pure hydrogen. The record value is for the equivalent Shell fuel-save unleaded 95 grade of petrol.
